Does Vegetation Help Prevent Runoff?
Purpose: To find out how much vegetation is needed to help prevent runoff.
Hypothesis: Vegetation absorbs the water and helps prevent runoff.
Experimental Design:
- Get six trays
- Tray one has no sponges
- Cover the bottom 1/4 of tray two with sponges
- Cover the bottom 1/2 of tray three with sponges
- Cover the bottom 3/4 of tray four with sponges
- Cover the bottom 7/8 of tray five with sponges
- Cover the entire bottom of tray six with sponges
- Pour dirt into all the trays
- Pour water into all the trays until the dirt gets wet enough to make "mud-pies"
- Observe and record the changes of all six trays absorbing the water
Observation:

Conclusion: The hypothesis was correct because Tray 6 had the entire bottom covered with sponges (vegetation). It did soak more water than the other trays.
